I bought my Kindle on a whim after reading a newspaper article about it, I was hoping it would save me luggage space and weight when I go on holiday. I was a little uncertain about having to make all purchases through the USA and I’m not sure why Amazon UK doesn’t support Kindle. Anyhow, I am thrilled with it. The Kindle arrived within three days, already programmed with my name and account. I had also ordered a UK charger for it from a UK Amazon seller which arrived at the same time. I was up and running in no time. I very quickly got used to reading on the screen rather than paper and also quickly got used to the page turning. Those who love paper books and aren’t sure about how they will take to this should take heart and put your reservations to one side. I am also old fashioned about books and I’m no geek when it comes to new technology, in fact I’m usually in the dark ages. But Kindle is so easy and friendly to use – books are downloaded in seconds with no fuss. A great feature is that you can download from the Kindle shop free samples of books, usually the first couple of chapters, to see how you like it before deciding whether or not to buy. The screen is great and page turning is easy, it can be done single-handed, with either hand, you just need to press your thumb on the perfectly located buttons when you are ready. My only gripe is availability and cost of books. Many books are free or cost next to nothing in the US but aren’t available to UK customers. I don’t understand why. Also, Amazon needs to expand its store of Kindle books but I’m sure this is being worked on as I type. New releases and best sellers can be expensive, sometimes dearer than paper books (which doesn’t make sense) but, again, I’m sure the prices will come down markedly over the next 12 to 18 months. You don’t have the same choice and value as you have with Amazon paper books or when you go into a book shop, but I have every confidence that we are well on the way. I

When my Kindle arrived, I was so excited to start using it. I had planned to take it with me when I travelled on business without having to lug around a heavy hardback book. I was so disappointed to find that the screen did not have a backlight option – I just assumed it would. I returned the Kindle, but if they ever add this option I’d buy it! While the screen is said to be very book-like as is, I would rather have the functionality and convenience of reading anytime/anywhere without the need for an external light source.
