Like most people, I was required to read this book in the late 60s. I don’t have any recollection of being touched by it at all. I read it again in college, and either I thought it was all about disaffection and rejecting middle class values or I was told that by my teachers.
I glanced at it again over my daughter’s shoulder on a long plane ride a few years ago and couldn’t wait for her to finish so I could read it again. I was shocked to see that I had completely missed the point: it’s about Holden’s vertiginous fall into depression after the death of his little brother. His parents and his sister are all too damaged by their own grief to help him, and he’s struggling to feel something while avoiding feeling anything. These are familiar demons, beautifully evoked.

I bought this card that we would have more capacity for taking digital pictures while on vacation. You get virtually the full amoung as available storage; as hoped. The upload and download speeds are okay but the the fastest that I have seen. I dont know it it is a hardware or software issue that keeps it from going faster but still an okay card for the money.

I drive an hour each way to work everyday and audio books keep me sane. That said, when one comes along that makes me want to stay in the car – or find resons to be there – it must be more than good! This is a totally engaging story, performed by four excellent narrators. The story takes you to the inside of the privileged homes of the old south and through the experience of “the help” tells a real story of how it was in the 50’s and the coming of the age of change. I loved every character, became totally engaged in the action, laughed, became enraged, and embraced the emotions of each and every character. A great read – and an even greater listen!

I love my Nintendo Wii. We couldn’t find one anywhere until we decided to look on Amazon. There were several for sale! The first time fell through because they were out-of-stock, but Amazon let us know of another vendor who had them. Thank you Amazon! I use the sports application, especially the bowling game.

The mobile is pretty easy to put together and seems to be holding interest of the baby but it “burns” through the batteries very fast. The mobile takes 3 type C batteries, which last at most an hour of continuous play. Effectively I have to replace batteries every three-four days of light use. Other than that seems to be an ok product.

I don’t yet have the scale here, but I have high hopes that it is going to wow me. I’ll post more when I know for sure.

While waiting for Michael Moore’s movie “Capitalism, A Love Story” to come out, I found this new movie about stock market corruption called “Stock Shock.” I heard “Capitalism” is being well received at the Venice Film Fest.
In the meantime Stock Shock-The Movie”Stock Shock” follows several Sirius XM investors through their experience of watching their stock go from almost ten dollars a share—down to 5 cents/share. The movie suggests this might be due to flash trading, greedy hedge funds, “naked short selling” and other market manipulation by high rollers on Wall Street. I don’t know if I’m a believer, but at least it gives a good review of how our stock markets are engineered.
